“Wild Now,” the debut single

from Tinvìs is available on 7” vinyl,

What you hear may be the first official Tinvìs release, but this baby has been on the back burner for a long time.

A friend who is no longer in this earthly realm but is never forgotten brought tinvìs and the label together. As if they dropped this beauty as a parting gift.

“Wild Now” is the lead single off the upcoming Texnia LP and a fitting call to action to find happiness and peace away from the screen world. In addition to Joel Daniel’s songwriting, guitar, and soothing croon, we’re thankful to Max Hart ( Tegan and Sara, We Are Scientists), Eric Gardner (Dot Hacker, Melissa Etheridge, Tom Morello) and Jon Natchez (The War on Drugs) for bringing a gorgeous letter to life.

The B-side features two songs, “On the Porch” and “Made My Day,” ditties from the Tinvìs mind factory that is only featured on the 7” inch record. If you decide to order or want a copy of the single, thank you for forgetting streams and supporting physical media.

The Chicago-based band Tinvìs (a mashup of Daniel’s hometowns Austin and Davis) releases Texnia (another mashup, this time with Texas and California) on October 11th, 2024, featuring ten songs in the heartland rock vein - fans of The War On Drugs and their predecessors like Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen are in for a real treat. Constantly swaying like a gentle breeze, Daniel’s from-the-gut-lyrics and melodies are a nostalgic comfort in an increasingly complicated world. The songs of texnia deserve the best players, and Daniel has assembled the best team to see them through.

A note on how this album was possible in a world of dying arts funding

Hi Reader, This is Joel from the “band.” I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly explain what interests me most about releasing this music and writing this note.

Problem 1: Cost of Living

Solution 1: Grants

The album Texnia was born of a problem: it is too expensive to live in the United States and make music. After twenty years of living in Davis, California, I noticed that my friends who had yet to make music professionally could afford to live there.  I fantasized about the Canadian model of supporting musicians and hypothesized that, on a local level, it could be done in the US.  In 2019, I proposed a grant program, the Davis Independent Music Initiative (“DIMI”), to the city of Davis, whereby the city would use funds allocated to the arts to support music-related projects – with a principal annual grant going to a musician or band so that they make a new musical work.  The City believed in the proposal and funded it. DIMI and the City of Davis have since funded two additional records and countless smaller projects, proving its success.  You can read about the first success story at my Substack in the article entitled “Musician Living Ain’t Easy.”  It’s about Nat Leffkoff, who not only used his grant funds to make a new record but also funded a house show tour whereby he leveraged a 10K grant into a 5x return.  Goosebumps.

Problem 2: Live Music Venues have disappeared

Solution 2: House Shows

DIMI led me to another problem: the United States has become a live music desert.  After starting DIMI and issuing grants, musicians would come to me and repeat the same chorus: “There is nowhere to play”; “It’s great that you are doing the grant program, but how can we get a gig?”.  I dug into this issue.  Turns out, it is true.  I write about this extensively in the article, “Why Everyone Should Be Hosting House Shows.”  To briefly illustrate the point, when I moved to Davis in the late 90s, there were seven places to play and see live music regularly; today, there are zero. Indeed, changing consumption habits play a role, but Live Nation and capitalism are certainly doing their part!

Notably, after spending a year on the problem, I think there is a highly viable solution around us—people’s homes, apartments, and dorm rooms.  I would propose a shift backward toward a community-based way of experiencing music to the 1800s and early 1900s – parlor shows.  A friend of mine made an app (probably to get me to stop talking about it) called CouchConcerts, specifically aimed at creating a network of house shows throughout the United States.  It provides attentive audiences for musicians and moves money directly into their hands without needing a middle person. It works.  I have used it as a host and as a musician.  Provided someone is willing to open their home to a musician (it doesn’t take much) and invite their friends over to watch, the live music and financial landscape for music and musicians in the US—and perhaps internationally—can fundamentally shift for the better.

As I write this, I am working on a House Show/Couch Show festival in Davis, CA, for the fall of 2024. If geography and timing allow, I would happily play a show for you, your friends, and your family in your living room. Please check out the links in the Linktree below and get in touch with me directly to discuss any of this. I want to be a part of the solution.

Significantly, every dollar of profit from this release will go directly to funding another musician or hosting a house show.

Thanks for taking the time, ~joel
